The terminal handles a lot more than Waiheke. If you are looking at a departure screen for the first time, the words to hunt for are the destination and the operator, not the pier number, because the pier is the thing most likely to have moved.
Getting to the terminal
For walking routes, connecting services and journey times, Auckland Transport runs the public network and its journey planner will route you door to door: at.govt.nz. The pin is at 99 Quay Street on the map.
The ferry drops you somewhere a car is largely surplus to requirements anyway — buses, taxis and bikes all operate on the island.
Leave more time than the crossing needs if you are catching a sailing between 10am and 12pm. That is the busiest window out of Auckland, and one tour operator tells its own guests to be at the terminal an hour before a walk-up 10am sailing. Outside that window the pressure comes off considerably.
The Waiheke end: Matiatia Wharf
You land at Matiatia, at the western end of the island. Oneroa, the main village, is the nearest settlement to the wharf, and Matiatia is also where nearly every tour on this site either starts or picks up — the self-guided eBike hire, the four-vineyards guide who meets his group there at 10:40am, and the gourmet food tour that begins there at 9:45am. If you have booked something, read your voucher for the meeting point before you sail, not after.
The island is 19.3 kilometres long and hilly, with a high point of about 231 metres, so where you land is not where the day happens. Working out how you get from the wharf to the bay or the cellar door is the actual planning task, and it is the one worth doing before you sail.
Do all the ferries leave from the same place?
The passenger services run downtown to Matiatia. Island Direct, the second passenger operator, has been running since November 2023 and is cheaper on the headline adult fare — check with the operator which berth it uses rather than turning up at pier 11 and hoping. Do not confuse it with Explore Group, which ran a Waiheke passenger service years ago and now runs a separate boutique service to one vineyard.
Cars are a different question again. SeaLink runs a vehicle ferry to Waiheke, and taking a car across is possible. Ask SeaLink. Most day visitors do not need it: the passenger fares are laid out here and they are a fraction of what a vehicle crossing implies.
