The ferry lands at Matiatia Wharf at the western end. Oneroa, the main village, is the closest settlement to it, and the bays run around the coast from there. Onetangi is the beach that comes up most — one of the tours here finishes with lunch at a beachfront restaurant there, and the valley behind it holds vineyards. Getting to any of them is a bus, a bike, a taxi or a stop on the Explorer bus, which does sixteen of them on a day pass.

What to check before you go
Whether a given bay is safe to swim at on the day you turn up. Conditions for surf, rips, tides and water quality vary. Read the signage at the beach, look at the water, and if there is a patrolled area, use it.
